ICT for 21st Century Learners
21st century learners need the skills, knowledge and expertise which will enable them to succeed in work and life in the 21st century, they are preparing to use technology that hasn’t been invented yet.
Students must possess ‘learning and innovation skills which include creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as information and ICT literacy’ (ATCS, 2014).
The Melbourne Declaration (2008) on educational goals for young Australians states that successful learners are ‘creative and productive users of technology, especially ICT, as a foundation for success in all learning areas’.
To become creative and productive users of technology students need to ‘continuously assess their changing needs and ever changing technological environment that surrounds them’ (Socol, 2007). Socol’s toolbelt theory is centred around the idea that humans are tool users, who select tools by considering the task, environment, individual skills and available tools.
To provide your children with the skills they need for success, this English unit encourages different methods of ICT so students can make their own selections and evaluate different technologies that are most suited to them. Students will be creating a digital literary text using puppet pals 2 app which allows students to create animated cartoons.
